Children who have not been baptized or who were baptized in another Christian tradition prepare for full initiation into the Catholic Church through the “Children’s Catechumenate.” The process is modeled on the adult process with parents or guardians as an essential part of the ongoing catechetical process, since they will be the ones to continue forming the child’s faith long after the child celebrates the Sacraments of Initiation. Parents are expected to be present for the entire formation process and walk this journey with the child.
This process usually takes at least two years and is dependent on the support of the child’s parents and the progress of the child in coming to an understanding of the faith at the appropriate level. Membership in the worldwide fellowship of the Catholic community means adopting God’s view of humanity as a single family. That seemingly impossible vision becomes our agenda of faith.
