The Magi were Eastern astrologers who saw the rising of a new star and who interpreted it to mean that a king was born. Because of their curiosity and faith, they wanted to visit this king. Braving difficulties and danger of travel, they followed the star and found the Christ Child. They brought with them gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Our gift-giving at Christmas is inspired by these three Kings.
The three gifts that they brought the New-Born King also have significance. The gold symbolizes virtue and Kingship, frankincense symbolizes prayer and Priesthood, and myrrh symbolizes suffering and death. The Magi remind us to trust in God when he calls us to action.
Reflection: Lord, You are always ready to guide me. But sometimes I don’t want to go where You lead. Grant me the grace to trust in You and to follow. Amen.
