The Lights which we use to decorate an evergreen tree (and just about everything else this time of year) represent Christ, the Light of the World. Before electric lights were invented, people used candles to light their evergreen tree.
Evergreen trees retain their green leaves all year round and because of this they symbolize perseverance, hope, and new life. Their needles and shape point upward, turning our thoughts to heaven.
These green thriving trees remind us of Jesus’ words, “The ones who persevere to the end shall be saved.” We can also think of it as a symbol of God’s everlasting love for us. Christmas lights represent Christ, the Light of the World. “I am the light of the world. No follower of mine shall ever walk in darkness; no, he shall possess the light of life.” Candles and Christmas lights also remind us that we are called to be light to others, to show them the way to Christ.
Reflection: Lord, may I see Christmas trees as a sign of hope and as a reminder that our faith must remain vibrant at all times in our lives, no matter what storms may bother us. Help me to be a light to others, to show them the way to You. When all seems hopeless, help me to remember that the darkness cannot overcome Your Light. May Your Light be my hope, my God. Amen.
