Pope Francis admonishes us that “we have not yet managed to adopt a circular model of production capable of preserving resources for present and future generations, while limiting as much as possible the use of non-renewable resources, moderating their consumption, maximizing their efficient use, reusing and recycling them.” (Laudato Si’, 22) He encourages us to give this serious consideration and metal recycling is one way that we can accomplish this. The socioeconomic and environmental benefits of metal recycling compared to mining and new production are many.
Metal recycling
is more energy efficient by 60-95% (varies by metal);
causes less impact on ecosystems and habitats due to mining;
uses 40% less water and causes 76% less water pollution;
produces 80% less air pollution and 58% less CO2;
creates well-paying jobs for skilled workers;
keeps metals out of landfills;
Provides economic benefits
can be implemented over and over indefinitely without losing quality;
preserves natural resources for future generations;
promotes a circular economy (maximum reuse vs use and dispose).
